New Teen Center Brings Promise for Boys & Girls Club Members

On Tuesday, October 13th, kids at the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster discovered yet another reason to keep coming, as the club unveiled a new teen center featuring an internet cafe, game systems, flat screen televisions and lounge areas.

Area business leaders, community members, parents and kids joined BGC staff and board members for the official opening of the center.

The center, formerly a storage area in the basement of the club, was completely renovated by Lowe’s. BB&T Bank generously donated sofas, flat screens and area rugs to help furnish the club. Buffalo Wild Wings were on hand to show their support by providing complimentary wings to attendees.

The center will serve as a safe place for teens to have downtime with friends and will go a long way toward helping the club achieve its goal of increasing teen membership. Teens attending the club will have access to positive mentors and valuable tools and resources that will help them advance and learn benefits of job preparedness and higher education.

Boys & Girls Club of Westminster Opens New Teen Center

Teens at the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster will now have a positive place to hang out and call their own.  Thanks to a partnership with Lowe's - who completely renovated basement storage space, and BB&T- who provided sofas, area rugs and two flat screen televisions, BGC of Westminster will open their first ever teen center called "The Spot" at the Union Street Club.  The kick-off event, which will include a ribbon cutting ceremony, club tour, food, activities and prizes, will take place on Tuesday, OCTOBER 13, 2009 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m.

"The Spot" will have a career services center, an Internet café,  lounge areas, electronic games, billiards table and much more.  The facility will serve many purposes for teens including a safe place to have downtime, hang out with friends and focus on job and career preparation.  BGC of Westminster expects that teen membership at the Boys & Girls Club will grow now that the teens have a dedicated space.

"The Spot" will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-9 p.m.  This club will be fully geared towards teens ages 12 -18. Programs at "The Spot" will include: the Keystone and Torch Club, college & career preparation, leadership development and technology & digital arts, all designed to meet the needs of teens.  Membership to the club will be offered to teens for just $20 a year.

Please join us for this exciting event!  For more information on the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster or for additional membership details, contact Tiffany Gill, Executive Branch Director, at 410-386-0135.

The Town Mall of Westminster hosted a recruitment day for the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster.  Our World ranked Double Dutch Team (Team Attitude) performed a spectacular exhibit that drew in onlookers from all over the mall.  The Audience was very impressed with the display of skills and talent.  Many of them joined the girls who gave a tutorial on double dutch.  Mr. Sean managed to hand out tons of brochures, applications and one week passes to the kids and families at the mall.  The event was a great kick off to our school year recruitment campaign.  Check out the rest of the pictures on the "Kids at Work" page.
